 IBSLEY COMMON

Ibsley Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest as it is one of only a handful of places in Hampshire where Greater Broomrape is found – a curious plant that is a parasite of gorse. Little is known about what is the optimum age of gorse for Greater Broomrape to flourish, so we will be coppicing old leggy gorse to create a varied age structure to the vegetation on site.

Meet at Ibsley common at top of Newtown Farm Road.

If coming from the south/Ringwood direction, turn off the A31 at Ringwood and take the A338 north to Salisbury. About 3 miles north of Ringwood, the main road enters Ibsley just before the thatched Old Beams pub on the right. Take a right turn before the pub signposted to “Ibsley and South Gorley”.

At the end of the lane turn left and follow the road through Ibsley village. Just past Ibsley garage on the left is a right turn – Newtown farm road (if you get to Hockey's Farm shop on the right – You’ve missed the turn!). follow this road up the hill until it becomes a dirt track. Take the right fork when it splits (ignoring National trust sign saying “No unauthorised vehicles beyond this point). Watch out for pot holes on the track. After a line of dragons teeth there is a gateway on the left – go up the track onto Ibsley common.

If coming from the south /Ringwood direction, turn off the A31 at Ringwood and take the A338 north to Salisbury. About a mile and half north of the village of Ibsley (the old Beams Inn is by the main road on the right), there will be a right turn to “North Gorley”.
