 HYDE COMMON

Hyde Common is the largest of Hampshire County Council's for New Forest Commons with an unspoilt, bygone feel about it-the Common is ringed by thatched cottages and the primary school's playing fields are literally the open common plus there are still "Girls" and "Boys" entrances to the school and a donkey weathervane on the roof.

We will be clearing gorse & silver birch from the center of the common to create nesting habitat for Nightjars, Dartford warblers and Stonechats, plus uncover some of the Medieval boundary earthworks that criss-cross the common.

Meet at the car park opposite the school.

Directions; If travelling from Ringwood direction-take A338 towards Salisbury. About 1 mile south of Fordingbridge, look for right hand turn signposted "Hyde/Hern Lane. Follow this lane for a mile and at the top of the hill there is a cross road with Hyde Primary School on the right and a cricket pitch on the left.

 BAGNUM OLD RAILWAY LINE

Bagnum Old railway Line is unique as it it is one of the few places in the New Forest where all 6 species of UK reptile have been recorded. It also lies in the middle of arguable the wildest lowland bog in the National Park.

We will be cutting small pine small pine, birch and hazel trees to create open sunny areas for reptiles and to maintain the neighbouring wetland habitat.

This is a remote site and only accessible via Forestry Commission tracks. Having met at the gateway, we will drive 1 mile along tracks then park up and walk half a mile to the work site. Tools and bags can be carried a bit closer to the work site in the Countryside vehicle.  The number of cars taken to the site could be reduced by leaving some cars in the Forestry England car park  Burbush Car park, south west of Burley on the road to Thorney Hill.  Then car share.

Grid Ref:              SU 203018.

What3Words:      ///reduce.inflation.winded

When trying to find the gateway meeting point, look out for the white Countryside Service 4x4 which will be parked outside the gate from 9.30am onwards.

Where we will be working will be very wet in places and so wellies are recommended (although there are some drier bits you can work on if you would prefer).

The main gate must be locked behind us.

Therefore this will be all day event.

IBSLEY COMMON

Greater Broomrape is a very rare and mysterious plant that is a parasite of gorse. The largest population of this plant is at Ibsley Common in the New Forest.

We will be cutting and burning gorse to create a varied structure to the gorse to benefit the plant.

If coming from the south/Ringwood direction, turn off the A31 at Ringwood and take the A338 north to Salisbury. After about 3 miles the main road enters Ibsley, just before the thatched Old Beams pub on the right, take the right turn signposted 'Ibsley and south Gorley' At the end of lane turn left and follow the road through Ibsley Village. Just past Ibsley Garage on the left is a right turn- Newtown Farm Road (if you get to Hockeys Farm shop on your right-you've missed the turn) -follow road up the hill until it becomes a dirt track. Take the right fork when it splits (Ignoring National Trust sign saying "No Unauthorised vehicles beyond this point " Watch out for potholes on this track. After a line of dragons teeth there is a gateway on the left-go up the track onto the common to park.

ANCIENT SALTWORKS AT KEYHAVEN

The landscape of the reserve was created many centuries ago when the marshes were contained behind a sea wall and shallow pans were dug for the production of salt. This site contains the largest area of ancient salt workings in the whole of Britain.  These earthworks are becoming lost under encroaching vegetation.  We will cut back the brambles and gorse to expose these important industrial archaeological features.  We need to car share as much as possible as parking is a little difficult..

There is then a three quarter mile walk along the Ancient Highway to the working site and some can have a lift in the trailer.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE WALK WE WILL MEET AT 9.30AM
