LYMINGTON - KEYHAVEN NATURE RESERVE

Livestock grazing is an important factor in maintaining the grasslands at the Reserve.  Ragwort is poisonous to cattle and ponies and landowners are required by law to attempt to control it - the most effective method being to pull it up by hand. As ragwort pulling is a very repetitive task, if people would like a break we may cut back the brambles along the approach path to the beach and check site for litter- if the weather is nice we can also sit on the beach and check for microplastics that are harmful to marine life.

Meet at the end of Lower Pennington Lane. By the car park the gate will be open for us to park in the field.

ANCIENT SALTWORKS CONSERVATION AT KEYHAVEN

The landscape of the reserve was created many centuries ago when the marshes were contained behind a sea wall and shallow pans were dug for the production of salt. The site contains the largest area of ancient salt workings in the whole of Britain. These earthworks are becoming lost under encroaching vegetation. We will cut back the brambles and gorse to expose these important industrial archaeological features.

We will meet at the end of Lower Pennington Lane by the car park.  The gat will be open for us to park in the field.  There is then a three quarter mile walk along the ancient highway to the working site.

Please note that due to the walk we will meet at 09.30.
