LYMINGTON/KEYHAVEN NATURE RESERVE

Four years ago, Nightjars were discovered nesting in the area of gorse and scrub at the Keyhaven end of the nature reserve.  They have returned every year since and we now know the Nightjar like three specific types of habitat in close proximity.  We will be coppicing the gorse to create tailor made nesting conditions for these rare exotic birds.

Parking in the pay & display car parks at Keyhaven.  Alternatively, you can park for free on the road from Milford to Keyhaven village. Just before the war memorial as you enter Keyhaven there is parking under trees alongside a red brick wall on the right hand side.

Meet at the pedestrian gate at the start of the path along the sea wall by Keyhaven harbour.

A 10-15 minute walk from here can be muddy in places although the work site is dry.

Sunday 26th February

CRANEMORE COMMON, HINTON

Todays Task is to continue the work we have been doing previously, clearing scrub and silver birches to encourage the Heath Lobelia. 'Lobelia urens', an incredibly rare wildflower.

The plant prefers poor acid soils – thriving on heathland and favouring disturbed ground. Over time, the ideal growing conditions of open heathland have been replaced by woodland and this has led to its demise.

Meet just inside the gate off the Ringwood Road.

Our signpost will be out.

LYMINGTON-KEYHAVEN NATURE RESERVE

Illey Point near Keyhaven used to be a shingle beach until it was enclosed by the seawall in the 1980's.  The shingle has become vegetated and home to many specialist plants-creating a habitat that is internationally rare.  we will be cutting back the gorse to help conserve this fragile ecosystem.  Parking as for 22nd January.  There is a 10-15 minute walk to the work site.  Getting there means climbing over a barbed wire fence. (a step ladder will be provided to help with access).  It is very exposed to the wind and rain.  If the weather forecast is bad, the meeting point will remain the same but a more sheltered work site will be found in the local area.
